Japanese Braiding The Art Of Kumihimo focus on the use of Marudai (Round stand) that is the most popular and versatile piece of equipment in use today. Working with a traditional Marudai is a delightful experience. The gentle rhythm of the repeated moves has a soothing quality.

This is an ideal book for those who wish to transition from Mobidai (Disc) to Marudai (Stand) because 5 of the 6 braids can be done on a disc with no adjustments to placement - The 6th does require nominal adjustment of placement at the end of each sequence and Wheat has a rather non=traditional refrain she uses for either Mobidai or Marudai

All of these braids have great potential for jewelry, especially beaded braids and offer those new to Japanese Braiding a glimpse of the possibilities while also acting as a bridge for those who have previously only been exposed to the simple 8 element round spiral.

As part of another project and by no means perfect since they were intended as a proof of concept - Wheat made these six braids on an experimental disc. You can view these images in one of our photo albums on Facebook at: Carey - Beginner Braids 1-5 and Carey - Beginner Braid 6 still on the prototype disc

There is no question - Jacqui Carey's approach with its clear step-by-step color photos guides beginner as well as those transitioning to the Marudai stand. Braids included are all 8 element/tama , Square, Round, Flat, Honeycomb, Hollow and Rounded Flat. There is even a section provided on how you can use your braids once they are finished.

Kumihimo is an accessible craft. Easy-to-make alternative equipment allows anyone to have a go.

Originally published as the Beginners Guide to Braiding - The Craft of Kumihimo,

This book sets out to demonstrate that Kumihimo does not have to be complicated to be beautiful. Kumihimo braids are often made with many bobbins following complex sets of moves. Yet simple sequences of moves can provide an array of stunning results. In this book just six sets of moves are shown - each one creating a distinct type of braid.

In addition to the six braids in this book, Wheat suggests you consider adding Shippou the Ladder Braid and an English Strawcraft braids currently known as "Fill The Gap"

With these 8 braids, your jewelry and accessory possibilities are likely enough to keep you creative for years to come.

We hope you will join us in our FaceBook Group Braids Beaded Kumihimo & More to learn more about these braids and how they can be used.
