Rail Road Yarns
Whether you know it as Trellis, Ladder or the one we use - Rail Road Yarn, it is truly a classic novelty (and yes, I recognize the contradiction in that )
When the first of the Railroads were introduced - it was a lovely Maryland lady named Anita who literally started the trend for these wonderful simple scarves made from just a skein or two. Who knew that soda straws on Southwest were the same as a Size 11 needle and when all you had were some straws and a neat new novelty yarn picked up on the way to the airport AND y our flight was delayed, you could start a trend Simple as this pattern is, even though I think I wrote it on at least a gazillion sales slips at Fiberworks over the years. Anita traveled a LOT and deserves the credit for what became an almost viral spread of the idea among Yarn Lovers who knit. In fact, several yarn company executives are quite thankful for her ingenuity. The crochet version is mine, but certainly not anything anyone else could not have extrapolated. Wheat prefers to use at least a 6.5mm hook or it is just too stressful For Tunisian try using a 6.5mm hook and Tunisian Simple Stitch I am thinking the new Clover Double Ended hooks, at about 6 inches long, might be a very nice length for this type of project. Will try and let you know. Speaking of Stressful, Rail Road yarns and Knitting Looms other than maybe the Clover Wonder Knitter are something you may not want to try at home. Simple Scarf: K=Knit Size 11 or large Needle C=Crochet Size 6.5 or larger Hook Knit and/or Crochet Instruction K-Cast On or C-Chain 13 to 20 (Except when riding on Motorcycles or in convertibles, I tend to suffer from Isadora Duncan scarf , so prefer all my scarves to be at least 6 inches wide and quite along. Please do not test your sanity by attempting to use the chainless base row technique. ). Knit Stitch or Single Crochet until you have about 12-24 inches of yarn remaining. K-Cast Off or C-/SlipStitch Depending on the width, length and if you want to take advantage of the wonderous fringing this yarn creates, you will need 50g to 150g for a reasonable length scarf. For a LONG, scarf with dramatic 10-12 inches fringe, place on at least one extra ball just for the fringe .. or not as you choose. If you have a favorite tip for working with the RailRoad yarns, let me know - I love to share it. (or a link to where you describe your tip or trick)
